{"id":3028,"date":"2016-10-03T11:19:31","date_gmt":"2016-10-03T15:19:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter\/?page_id=3028"},"modified":"2016-10-03T11:19:31","modified_gmt":"2016-10-03T15:19:31","slug":"new-vice-presidents","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2016\/along-the-walk\/new-vice-presidents\/","title":{"rendered":"New Vice Presidents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Cresswell, Hitchell take their places on leadership team<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Trinity College welcomed two new vice presidents during the summer of 2016.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3048\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3048\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2016\/files\/2016\/10\/Timothy-Cresswell.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3048\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2016\/files\/2016\/10\/Timothy-Cresswell.jpg\" alt=\"Timothy Cresswell\" width=\"300\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2016\/files\/2016\/10\/Timothy-Cresswell.jpg 400w, https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2016\/files\/2016\/10\/Timothy-Cresswell-211x300.jpg 211w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3048\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Timothy Cresswell<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>ACADEMIC AFFAIRS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tim Cresswell was named the College\u2019s new dean of the faculty and vice president for academic affairs, the senior position in academic administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this key role,\u201d said President Joanne Berger-Sweeney in making the announcement of Cresswell\u2019s appointment, \u201cTim will work to sustain and strengthen the College\u2019s tradition of academic excellence and innovation, collaborate with and inspire our intellectually engaged and creative faculty, and play a major role within the senior College leadership in defining strategic goals for Trinity\u2019s future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cresswell, who joined Trinity in July and reports to Berger-Sweeney, comes from Northeastern University in Boston, where he served as associate dean for faculty affairs in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, professor of history and international affairs, and associate director for public humanities at the Northeastern Humanities Center.<\/p>\n<p>Cresswell said he feels this is a \u201cgood moment\u201d for Trinity. \u201cThere is a strong and visionary leadership as well as an excellent, multitalented faculty,\u201d he said. \u201cI look forward to helping to define and strengthen Trinity College, the liberal arts, and the Hartford community as Trinity moves toward its 200th birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before assuming his academic and administrative responsibilities at Northeastern, Cresswell served in administration and on the faculties of Royal Holloway, University of London; the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and Lampeter; and the University of Connecticut. He has held honorary faculty positions at the University of Neuch\u00e2tel in Switzerland and at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>Cresswell holds a B.A. in geography from University College London in the United Kingdom; an M.S. in geography from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and a second Ph.D. in English\u2013creative writing from Royal Holloway, University of London. The author of 11 books, Cresswell is an internationally recognized geographer who is intrigued by issues of place and mobility. His most recent work focuses on Maxwell Street Market in Chicago and its evolution over 130 years. In addition, he is a poet who explores similar themes about space and place in his two collections:\u00a0<em>Soil<\/em>, published in 2013, and\u00a0<em>Fence<\/em>, published in 2015.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3059\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3059\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2016\/files\/2016\/10\/DH.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3059 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2016\/files\/2016\/10\/DH.jpg\" alt=\"Dan Hitchell\" width=\"300\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2016\/files\/2016\/10\/DH.jpg 300w, https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2016\/files\/2016\/10\/DH-256x300.jpg 256w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3059\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dan Hitchell<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>FINANCE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dan Hitchell was named Trinity\u2019s new vice president of finance and chief financial officer. Reporting to Berger-Sweeney, Hitchell, who also joined Trinity in July, is responsible for the strategic oversight and management of the College\u2019s financial resources and operations.<\/p>\n<p>Hitchell comes to Trinity from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, where he served as vice president for finance and administration and treasurer. In an announcement to the campus community about Hitchell\u2019s appointment, Berger-Sweeney wrote, \u201cDan brings to Trinity the ability to frame complex financial issues in straightforward terms, to create feasible solutions, to plan and implement capital projects, to manage the College\u2019s debt portfolio, and to steward the College\u2019s resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has in-depth experience operating in the challenging financial environment that liberal arts colleges \u2014 and all of higher education \u2014 face today,\u201d said Berger-Sweeney. \u201cThis breadth and depth of expertise, combined with Dan\u2019s outgoing and collaborative manner, were primary factors in the search committee\u2019s recommendation and in my decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hitchell said, \u201cMy family and I are excited about joining the Trinity community and making the move to Connecticut. I am honored to become a member of Trinity\u2019s leadership team and to take part in the strategic planning process that will guide the College as it prepares to enter its third century.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prior to joining Ohio Wesleyan in 2012, Hitchell served for six years at Webster University in St. Louis, where he was associate vice president for resource planning and budget, and, before that, for 15 years at Saint Louis University as director of financial planning and budgeting.
