Photo by Amanda Macchia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe original goal was to provide a space at Trinity College for positive, healthy, and fun interaction between Trinity students and Hartford youth,\u201d says Magee McIlvaine \u201906, who, with Jason Azevedo \u201908, created the Trinity International Hip-Hop Festival in 2006. Since its founding, the festival has continued to grow thanks to the dedication of Trinity students working behind the scenes. Each year, the Trinity chapter of the Temple of Hip Hop, with the support of faculty adviser Seth Markle, associate professor of history and international studies, collaborates with Nomadic Wax and World Hip Hop Market, two companies devoted to international hip-hop and social change, to make the event a reality. The support of Khaiim \u201cSelf Suffice the RapOet\u201d Kelly \u201903, Jasmin Agosto \u201910, and Taris \u201cMachineGun Poptart\u201d Clemons also is key, says Markle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2017\/files\/2017\/09\/HipHop2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3754\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2017\/files\/2017\/09\/HipHop2.jpg\" alt=\"\" height=\"334\" width=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2017\/files\/2017\/09\/HipHop2.jpg 625w, https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2017\/files\/2017\/09\/HipHop2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>The 2017 festival \u2014 the 12th annual \u2014 took place in April featuring the theme \u201cU.N.I.T.Y.: Unifying Gender, Race, and Class through Hip-Hop\u201d and offering more than 20 events, going far beyond music with lectures and panel discussions, photo exhibitions, and master dance classes. Hip-hop pioneer MC Lyte, the first female hip-hop artist to perform in the White House, was the headliner; past years have featured Brother Ali, Talib Kweli, Rakim, and K\u2019Naan, among other artists from around the world.
