Visitors learn about Stowe\u2019s childhood, travels, and family while discussing social issues of the past and present. According to Vivian Nabeta M\u201911, the center\u2019s director of marketing, the National Historic Landmark \u201cpreserves and interprets Stowe\u2019s Hartford home and the center\u2019s historic collections, promotes vibrant discussion of her life and work, and inspires commitment to social justice and positive change.\u201d The center, adjacent to The Mark Twain House &amp; Museum, is in an area of the city known as Nook Farm, so named for its location near a bend, or nook, in the Park River. It was there in the late 1800s that a tight-knit community of intellectuals and progressive thinkers\u2014including Stowe and Twain\u2014took up residence.
