Amid the frenzy of the COVID-19 pandemic, Richards\u2019s words provide a moment of reflection and calm<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>By Caroline Richards &#8217;22<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6240\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6240\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6240\" src=\"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2020\/files\/2020\/09\/Trinity-Riverfront-vert-30.jpg\" alt=\"Connecticut River\" width=\"350\" height=\"524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2020\/files\/2020\/09\/Trinity-Riverfront-vert-30.jpg 656w, https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2020\/files\/2020\/09\/Trinity-Riverfront-vert-30-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2020\/files\/2020\/09\/Trinity-Riverfront-vert-30-375x562.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6240\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Nick Caito<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>The Connecticut River<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>the people set up shop along the river beds,<br \/>\npassing smoke back and forth to the stirring<br \/>\nof the crickets in the tall grass<\/p>\n<p>by the ice coolers. they chuckle from deep<br \/>\nbelow their chests and trade things<br \/>\nback and forth, this or that between them<\/p>\n<p>and beside them the river keeps time.<br \/>\nin plastic chairs they sit and smoke<br \/>\nand watch the river go by as rippled flashes<\/p>\n<p>of their lives. when they were younger<br \/>\nthey ran lean and naked into the river<br \/>\nand after they perched on the bank<\/p>\n<p>and felt changed, older somehow.&nbsp;<br \/>\ntheir imparted words inhabit more space<br \/>\nbeside the river than in the grey city air,<\/p>\n<p>so their plans are laid out in the reeds<br \/>\nby the heavy pebbles they give to the blue<br \/>\nwater and watch disappear into the murk<\/p>\n<p>of time. the river awakens them,<br \/>\nrubs its long fingers against the rushing<br \/>\nrocks on the algae-coated floor<\/p>\n<p>and stretches its slender neck about<br \/>\nthe children resting on the sandy shoulder<br \/>\nof yesterday. further on<\/p>\n<p>they sometimes wave<br \/>\nto a passing barge or to the sailboats<br \/>\nchasing white skirts late into June.<\/p>\n<p>they will see me on the other side, too,<br \/>\nwatching them watch<br \/>\nthe river as it winds quietly between<\/p>\n<p>the land and the grass, smoothing our hair<br \/>\nbefore offering our hands as though<br \/>\nwe are not strangers,<\/p>\n<p>departing again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Connecticut River The Trinity Reporter&nbsp;asked creative writing student Caroline Richards \u201922 to pen a piece about the landmark river that flows through Hartford.
