In 1999, Hussain created an insurance plan that provides economic incentives to regional farmers; the insurance safeguards snow leopards,&nbsp;one of the world\u2019s most endangered species,&nbsp;from being killed in response to an attack on a farmer\u2019s herd.<\/p>\n<p>Project Snow Leopard, launched in Hussain\u2019s home country, promotes the coexistence of humans and snow leopards. The project has three goals:&nbsp;to create compensation for farmers, reducing economic loss; to construct predator-proof corrals for farmers; and to monitor the snow leopard\u2019s population through genetic analysis and camera trapping.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6775\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6775\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6775 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2021\/files\/2021\/09\/Hushe-Pug-Marks-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"A pugmark of a snow leopard\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2021\/files\/2021\/09\/Hushe-Pug-Marks-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-fall2021\/files\/2021\/09\/Hushe-Pug-Marks.jpg 726w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6775\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A pugmark of a snow leopard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 2006, with the help of a grant provided by the Rolex Awards for Enterprise, Hussain\u2014a trained economist and environmental anthropologist\u2014expanded the project to 10 additional valleys across Baltistan, impacting approximately 15,000 people. Today, the insurance plan has been adopted in India, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, and China. Through Hussain and his team\u2019s work, the snow leopard population is now stable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hussain\u2019s efforts have won numerous other awards, including the United Nations Equator Prize.
