{"id":1080,"date":"2014-02-11T19:44:39","date_gmt":"2014-02-11T19:44:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/ebuckhor\/?page_id=895"},"modified":"2014-02-11T19:44:39","modified_gmt":"2014-02-11T19:44:39","slug":"two-students-win-honors-at-national-math-competition","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-winter2014\/along-the-walk\/two-students-win-honors-at-national-math-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Students Win Honors at National Math Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Greg Convertito and George Thekkedath, both \u201916, receive awards<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Greg Convertito and George Thekkedath, members of the Class of 2016, were awarded Certificates for Outstanding Presentations at the Mathematical Association of America\u2019s (MAA) annual MathFest competition held last summer at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford.<\/p>\n<p>The competition, billed as a \u201ccelebration of mathematics,\u201d gives students from colleges and universities across the globe the opportunity to demonstrate their facility, creativity, and skill in math. The 2013 MathFest featured student presentations from some of the top institutions in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, including Yale, Notre Dame, Duke, Columbia, Princeton, and Dartmouth.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_896\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-winter2014\/files\/2014\/02\/GregConvertito.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-896\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-896\" alt=\"Greg Convertito '16\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-winter2014\/files\/2014\/02\/GregConvertito.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-896\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Greg Convertito &#8217;16<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s unusual for first-year students to be awarded Certificates for Outstanding Presentations, but neither David Cruz-Uribe, professor of mathematics and Convertito\u2019s adviser, nor Gregory Kelsey, visiting assistant professor of mathematics and Thekkedath\u2019s adviser, were surprised. Cruz-Uribe called Convertito \u201cone of the best students I\u2019ve ever worked with. His enthusiasm and his mathematical spirit are just amazing.\u201d Similarly, Kelsey said he was \u201cvery pleased and impressed\u201d with Thekkedath\u2019s ability and the quality of his presentation. \u201cIt speaks to his ability to communicate his ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Convertito, a George A. Kellner \u201964 Presidential Scholar from Fairfield, Connecticut, and Thekkedath, a Class of 1918 Scholar from Lawrenceville, Georgia, participated in last summer\u2019s 10-week Interdisciplinary Science Program at Trinity, an innovative academic program designed to broaden and enrich the study of science and mathematics, under the leadership of Alison Draper, director of the Science Center and lecturer in interdisciplinary science. As such, both students were in Hartford when the MAA get-together was taking place.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_897\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-winter2014\/files\/2014\/02\/GeorgeThekkedath.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-897\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-897\" alt=\"George Thekkedath\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/reporter-winter2014\/files\/2014\/02\/GeorgeThekkedath.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-897\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">George Thekkedath &#8217;16<br \/>Photo by Richard Bergen<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The title of Thekkedath\u2019s project was \u201cGeometry and Mass Transit Distance,\u201d while Convertito\u2019s was \u201cRationality of Calculus Optimization Problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The MAA student chapters program was launched in January 1989 to encourage students to continue their studies in the mathematical sciences, provide opportunities to meet other students at national meetings, and offer career information in the mathematical sciences.
