{"id":277,"date":"2014-01-07T23:20:18","date_gmt":"2014-01-07T23:20:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/sportshistory\/?p=277"},"modified":"2014-01-08T15:40:34","modified_gmt":"2014-01-08T15:40:34","slug":"carter-pcqs-1614","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/sportshistory\/2014\/01\/07\/carter-pcqs-1614\/","title":{"rendered":"Carter PCQs 1\/6\/14"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Basic Definitions Handout PCQs:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-The idea of race seems to be a rather cut and dry theory based on anatomists such as Cuvier who felt that there were three separate subspecies, which in turn drastically affected the social structure of society.<\/p>\n<p>-The racial discrimination problem emphasizes the notion that discrimination is the norm in society, but in countries such as the US, there is the constant emphasis on equality in all aspects of living.<\/p>\n<p>-The origins of race and racial discrimination seem to stem from capitalist ideals that created the social structure of society and delegated non white people into a inferior category in order to attain their desired capitalist ideals.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>-Sports seemed to also be an issue because it conflicted with the racial beliefs set in generations before, claiming that white people were superior in many ways, but then non-white men such as Joe Johnson became very successful athletes.<\/p>\n<p>-There is a bit of irony in the sense that nationalism is meant to be synonymous with sports but there are still nation-states such as the UK, which has territories that are considered sovereign states.<\/p>\n<p>-Nationalism breeds the issue of having loyalty to a group with your same set of beliefs and ideas, a characteristic that inherently causes discrimination, whether it be regarding race, ethnicity, or religion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Mapping the Global Football Field<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Globalization seems to be extremely prevalent in soccer based on the fact that there are players from various countries playing for clubs in different leagues throughout the world.<\/p>\n<p>-The neo-mercantilist theory in regards to football seems to be rather competitive and self-promoting even though they claim to be trying to promote the game of football as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>-These nation states hype up football matches such as international friendlies and use the idea of nationalism in order to arouse support from the masses for the sole benefit of acquiring funds, as shown in various countries in the past.<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cIn Ghana, Greece, Kenya, Nigeria, Poland and other nations in recent years, serious conflicts have arisen between national governments and football associations, as the former have criticized corruption or mismanagement in football, while the latter complain about oppressive governmental interference\u201d(223).<\/p>\n<p>-Neo-liberal ideals in football seems to heavily relate to todays society in the sense that these large companies such as Emirates use football as a means to promote their own product. So the sense of a free market in football can lead to vast inequalities in spending amongst clubs within a league.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; But, by means of transnationalism, there is the interaction of different countries as a whole that are brought together through events such as the World Cup, Euro Cup, etc. and are a way of strengthening international relations.<\/p>\n<p>-\u201cMoreover, economic liberalization has precipitated serious outbreaks of indebtedness and bankruptcy\u201d(225).
