Chris Hager, Associate Professor of English at Trinity College, stands alongside filmmaker Steven Spielberg and a bronze bust of President Abraham Lincoln. The occasion was the celebration of The 2014 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize, on April 24, at the Union League Club in New York City. The Prize is awarded by Gettysburg College and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Hager was one of six finalists for his book, Word by Word: Emancipation and the Act of Writing (Harvard University Press). The book was recognized as “an original and compelling study, that asserts that more slaves were literate than is commonly thought, and that their fugitive letters, diaries, petitions and other writings provide valuable insights.” Spielberg received a Special Achievement Award for his movie “Lincoln,” released in 2012, which won two Academy Awards, was nominated for twelve, and grossed over $275 million worldwide.
