Trinity Participates in National Novel Writing Month

This photo was taken last weekend at The Allan K. Smith Writing Center, which has now held two write-ins at Trinity as part of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).  NaNoWriMo is an organization that encourages writers to dedicate a month (November) to sitting down and writing a 50,000 word novel.  Writers register online at nanowrimo.org and sign in to the region in which they’ll be writing their novel; this provides writers with nearby support, but also adds a competitive aspect as various regions enter word count wars with each other. Trinity College is a part of the “Connecticut: North” region, which has 416 active writers right now, and, as a region, has written 3.5 million words this month.

“The goal isn’t perfection, or even, ultimately, to publish, but, rather, to just get people writing,” Alexander Champoux ’11, organizer of the first write-in at Trinity College, said.

Sarah Kacevich ’13, one of several Amnesty student organizers of “Pizzapalooza,” a blind pizza taste test on campus, presents a manager at First and Last restaurant with a certificate recognizing the winner of the “Best Specialty Pizza” category.  Harry’s Pizza in West Hartford was chosen for “Best Cheese Pizza.”  Students were charged $3 to participate, and nearly $200 was raised for the Trinity chapter of Amnesty International.  Not only is there plenty of great pizza around Trinity, but there are hundreds of high quality restaurants in proximity to the College.  For a comprehensive and diverse list of local dining establishments, visit: http://www.trincoll.edu/Admissions/visit/Restaurants.htm

Swimming Hour of Power

Each year, the Trinity men’s and women’s swimming and diving team participates in the Hour of Power, in memory of Ted Mullin, a swimmer at Carleton College, who lost his battle with a rare form of sarcoma.  The Hour of Power was Ted’s favorite set as a swimmer.  It is a full 60 minutes of relay style sprinting with the goal of keeping all relays within one body length of each other for the entire hour.  According to Kristen Noone, head swimming coach at Trinity, “It is a completely exhausting set, but very rewarding.  It requires a lot of teamwork to communicate and switch teams in order to keep each relay together, and our team did a great job of working together.”

Professor Robert Kirschbaum and the 42 Letter Name

1387-Robert Kirschbaum

Robert Kirschbaum, Professor of Fine Arts at Trinity, received a Faculty Research Grant in support of his print folio/artist’s book, “The 42-Letter Name.”  The folio consists of forty-two images, reflecting the forty-two letters of one of the secret names of God, an acrostic made of the first letter of each word in a nearly 2,000 year-old prayer, the “Ana B’koach,” ascribed to the Tanna R. Nehunya ben ha-Qanah. The work is a  visual “midrash” —  commentary — on concepts found in early Jewish mysticism relating to The Creation.  “The 42-Letter Name” is on display at Saint Joseph College Art Gallery through December 19, 2010.

New Tennis Courts Named for Legendary Trinity Coach

Trinity recently dedicated its new tennis facility to legendary coach, Paul Assaiante.  The courts are complete with a blue surface, stands, and lighting.  At the opening reception, congratulatory notes from tennis greats Billie Jean King, a past recipient of an honorary degree from Trinity, and Stan Smith, were read aloud.  Assaiante is the winningest coach in Trinity history, at the helm of both the men’s squash and men’s tennis teams.  For more on the dedication of the courts and Assaiante’s storied career, visit: http://www.trincoll.edu/AboutTrinity/News_Events/trinity_news/100510_AssaianteDedication.htm(Photo courtesy Joanne Schickerling)
