Another Season in the Books for Trinity Little League

Trinity College, through the Office of Community Relations, sponsored a little league team in Mayor Mike Peters Little League for the past three seasons. This year’s team, made up of 16 players from the Hartford area, finished with a 5-6 record. Trinity played an instrumental role in revitalizing the Mayor Mike League after it had been defunct for many years. Trinity recently hosted the team and their families for its annual banquet which was held July 7th in the Vernon Social Center. Each player received a team trophy and a special book about the City of Hartford.

Physics Research in a McCook Lab on Campus

In the above photo, Matt Bermudez ’09 works with physics professor David Branning to collect a sample of 17 million polarization measurements on single photons. Each photon was prepared in a quantum superposition state of Horizontal (H) and Vertical (V) polarization, and then measured, with a polarizer and detectors, to be either H- or V-polarized. The sequence of H-V outcomes, which is predicted to be random by quantum mechanics, were then subjected to fifteen tests developed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for computer-based random-number generators. Branning is now working on a follow-up to this project with other students.  The results will be published in the September issue of the Journal of the Optical Society of America.

Environmental Research in Kansas

Dr. William Johnson, Professor of Geology at the University of Kansas, Michelle Payton ’12 and Giuliani Lopez ’11, environmental studies majors at Trinity, analyze the magnetic properties of soils at the Konza Prairie, a long-term ecological research station in central Kansas.  The priority of their research is to strengthen the understanding of the processes that affect the magnetic (and non-magnetic) properties of modern and buried soils, which is an important step in using soils as reliable recorders of past climate.  The team analyzes the magnetic properties of soils that have experienced a range of prescribed burns for more than 20 years in order to quantify the effect of prairie-fires on soils.

Konza Prairie is located in the Flint Hills of Kansas, a plateau dissected by small streams,
creating a landscape characterized by broad, flat-topped ridges.

Trinity Students Tour MTD (Suxhou) Corp. in China

Trinity students in the China Summer Study Program stand in front of MTD (Suzhou) Corp. managed by Charles Moll ’93 (Asian Studies Major) in Suzhou Industrial Park, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. Moll is the General Manager of this 200 person factory that makes lawn mowers, edgers, tillers, and snow blowers for the China market, the U.S. market, Australia, and Europe. Moll gave Trinity students a presentation on his experience and a tour of his factory and company.

Samba Fun

Berimbrown, Brazil’s 10-member Afro-fusion band, headlined the fourth annual Samba Fest at Trinity College, as part of the group’s North American debut.  Despite rain forcing the event indoors to the Koeppel Community Sports Center, that did not get in the way of a day of dynamic music and festivity.  The event continues to gain popularity around the city of Hartford, as evidenced by another strong turnout from the community.  (photo by Zach Epstein ’10)

Trinity Women in Sports: a Slideshow

The evolution of the female Bantam began 40 years ago, when Trinity allowed its first female students.  The athletic programs for women’s sports have flourished since, winning league titles, and performing on a national stage in several sports, including two National Championships apiece in both women’s squash and women’s crew.  For the Trinity athletics page, visit: athletics.trincoll.edu
