The Trins are Alive, with the Sound of Music

Marcia Hinckley M’91 (right) and her husband Sam (left) applaud a performance by Peter Zay (above) at the Chamber Music Series portion of the annual Summer Music Series at Trinity.  Zay is the principal cellist of the Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra and a member of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra.  Hinckley, a pianist and vocalist, and her husband, have been coming to the Music Series since they discovered it more than five years ago.  “The series is a gem,” she said after the chamber performance – her personal favorite portion of the weeklyperformances, which are followed by an outdoor picnic carillon concert on the Long Walk Quad. For photos, visit: http://bit.ly/NBEQRY.  For more information on the 2012 series, visit:

Trinity Alums Give “Real World” Advice to Summer Science Students

Miriam Zichlin ’06, Research Coordinator and Data Analyst at Judge Baker Children’s Center, Harvard Medical School, talks with Trinity undergraduates who remained on campus as part of the annual Summer Science Program led by Trinity faculty.  Several recent Trinity alums in the science fields came back to talk to current students about their experiences at and beyond Trinity, and to answer student questions.

“Lots of memories of summers at Trinity flooded back immediately,” Zichlin said. “I’m glad I was able to share some of my perspectives of ‘the real world.’  It’s great to see how excited and optimistic the current students are.  They’re all doing really interesting research.”

Trinity is buzzing with activity this summer, as several campus improvement projects are under way and on schedule to be completed before the start of the fall semester.   The most notable project, a complete redevelopment of the Mather Quad, is pictured above. The project broke ground in May, just after Commencement, and will be completed at the start of the academic year. Upon completion, it will be renamed the Gates Quad, in honor of trustee John Gates, Jr. ’76, P’13, and the lead donor for the project.  More information and images will be shared upon completion of the project.  For more on the Quad transformation, visit: http://bit.ly/L620Nc.

Hawk on the Walk

A feathered friend perched on the sill of an office window on the Long Walk to say hello to Trinity.  The campus is no stranger to birds, and specifically juvenile Red-tailed hawks, pictured above.  Professor Joan Morrison says this bird probably hatched just this spring.  “Juvenile hawks frequent campus probably because there is alot of food for them,” she said.  “They mostly eat squirrels.”  Morrison adds that there are three known hawk nests around Trinity, where this juvenile could have come from, the closest of which being Pope Park.  “There are many hawk nests around Hartford,” Morrison said.  “These raptors do well in the city, eating squirrels and birds and rats.  They nest in Hartford’s large trees but also on buildings and billboards.”
