{"id":1379,"date":"2013-08-08T15:23:54","date_gmt":"2013-08-08T15:23:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/?p=1379"},"modified":"2013-08-08T15:23:54","modified_gmt":"2013-08-08T15:23:54","slug":"armchair-chronicler-of-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/2013\/08\/08\/armchair-chronicler-of-america\/","title":{"rendered":"Armchair Chronicler of America"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2013\/08\/img770.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1380\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2013\/08\/img770-300x249.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2013\/08\/img770-300x249.jpg 300w, https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2013\/08\/img770-1024x852.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>We recently acquired the first English translation of a famous chronicle of the New World, written and compiled by Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas (d. 1625), who was appointed the official historian of the Indies (Cronista Mayor de Indias) by King Philip II in 1586.<\/p>\n<p>Originally published between 1601-15 as the <em>Historia General de los Hechos de los Castellanos en las Islas i Tierra Firme del Mar Oceano<\/em>, the <em>History<\/em> is, according to one scholar, &#8220;a huge work of erudition.\u00a0 Its author, who never crossed the Atlantic Ocean, incorporated the greatest collection of sources up to that date, including many important writings that had not yet been published, such as the histories of Bernal Diaz and Bartolome de las Casas, and the valuable <em>Geografia y Descripcion Universal de las Indias<\/em> by the cosmographer Juan Lopez de Velasco.\u00a0\u00a0 . . . [It constitutes] a true encyclopedia of all the facts pertaining to the Spanish involvement with the Indies between 1492 and 1555.\u00a0 The narrated events are arranged in chronological order by decades.\u00a0 Since the author was sufficiently removed from the facts he narrated, he made judgments without worrying about possible accusations and lawsuits by the people involved, a common problem in many of the earlier histories of the Indies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cited source: <em>Spanish Historical Writing about the New World<\/em>:<em> 1493-1700<\/em> by Angel Delgado-Gomez.
