{"id":1561,"date":"2014-04-04T18:08:43","date_gmt":"2014-04-04T18:08:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/?p=1561"},"modified":"2014-04-10T23:52:14","modified_gmt":"2014-04-10T23:52:14","slug":"the-bard-in-the-watkinson-3-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/2014\/04\/04\/the-bard-in-the-watkinson-3-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The Bard in the Watkinson (4): The First Folio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2014\/04\/FFF1866.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1562\" alt=\"FFF1866\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2014\/04\/FFF1866-300x247.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2014\/04\/FFF1866-300x247.jpg 300w, https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2014\/04\/FFF1866-1024x844.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Unfortunately we do NOT have the so-called &#8220;First Folio&#8221; (London, 1623) of Shakespeare&#8211;a critically important book in Shakespeare studies as the first collected edition of his plays, wherein were printed for the first time eighteen plays!\u00a0 They were as follows:<\/p>\n<p><em>The Tempest<\/em>, <em>Two Gentlemen of Verona<\/em>, <em>Measure for Measure<\/em>, <em>The Comedy of Errors<\/em>, <em>As You Like It<\/em>, <em>The Taming of the Shrew<\/em>, <em>All&#8217;s Well that Ends Well<\/em>, <em>Twelfth Night<\/em>, <em>The Winter&#8217;s Tale<\/em>, <em>King John<\/em>, <em>Henry VI part I<\/em>, <em>Henry VIII<\/em>, <em>Coriolanus<\/em>, <em>Timon of Athens<\/em>, <em>Julius Caesar<\/em>, <em>Macbeth<\/em>, <em>Antony and Cleopatra<\/em>, and <em>Cymbeline<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>We do, however, have an <a href=\"http:\/\/ctwweb.wesleyan.edu:7002\/vwebv\/holdingsInfo?bibId=38583\">excellent facsimile<\/a> of it, produced in 1866 by Howard Staunton, which was created using the newly invented technology of photo-lithography.
