{"id":388,"date":"2011-10-14T13:19:48","date_gmt":"2011-10-14T13:19:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/?p=388"},"modified":"2011-10-14T13:19:48","modified_gmt":"2011-10-14T13:19:48","slug":"road-trip-of-the-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/2011\/10\/14\/road-trip-of-the-book\/","title":{"rendered":"Road Trip of the Book!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Posted by Sally Dickinson, Associate Curator]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2011\/10\/img302.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-389\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2011\/10\/img302-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was invited to go on a field trip to New York with the Book History class at Trinity.\u00a0 It was a beautiful fall day and proved to be inspirational in more ways than just a walk down Madison Avenue.\u00a0 Our first stop was <a href=\"http:\/\/centerforbookarts.org\/\">The Center for Book Arts<\/a>.\u00a0 It was a great opportunity for me to make contact with an organization that fosters creative work in making and reinterpreting the book.\u00a0 I chatted with book artist Roni Gross as the class arrived and quickly looked at a collection of broadsides on poetry that was produced at the Center.\u00a0 From my perspective as a curator and book arts devotee, it was extremely helpful to see historical presses and to participate in a printing exercise that Roni deftly guided us through.\u00a0 She gave an overview of the history of printing before we dove into composing our names from monotypes for a group broadside.\u00a0 We all got to pull a couple of prints from 2 working vandercooks, a type of press favored by artistic printers today.<\/p>\n<p>Next stop was one of my favorite places in the city\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.themorgan.org\/home.asp\">The Morgan Library<\/a> at the corner of 36<sup>th<\/sup> and Madison.\u00a0 When I want to see how things should be done in a rare book library, I often look to the Morgan as an example.\u00a0 \u201cMoney is no object\u201d seems to be their motto, which works for uncompromising displays of cultural artifacts and a world-renowned collection of rare books and manuscripts.\u00a0 Several years ago the brownstone mansion had been renovated and expanded with a stunning modern addition.\u00a0 It\u2019s important to have low light levels on paper artifacts and to support the bindings of fragile books.\u00a0 The architecture supported these requirements in an elegant way.\u00a0 The modern, plexiglass display cases at the Morgan had hidden lighting inside a metal frame that made the books &amp;
