(the second week of June) this year there were several opportunities to see Watkinson rarities.\u00a0 On Wendesday the 6th about a dozen alumni attended a presentation entitled &#8220;John James Audubon: American Dreamer.&#8221;\u00a0 Born in Haiti, educated in France, and sent to America to avoid the draft (i.e. Napoleon&#8217;s conscripted legions), Audubon is an early example of American self-fashioning.\u00a0 Works by Audubon, as well as his contemporaries <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_Wilson\">Alexander Wilson<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prideaux_John_Selby\">Prideaux John Selby<\/a>, and his fore-runner <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mark_Catesby\">Mark Catesby<\/a>, were out on display for folks to view.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2012\/06\/Elliott1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-803\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2012\/06\/Elliott1-300x279.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2012\/06\/Elliott1-300x279.jpg 300w, https:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/files\/2012\/06\/Elliott1-1024x953.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>On Friday a crowd of some 40-50 people (mostly Class of &#8217;57) enjoyed a screening of David Elliott&#8217;s award-winning film <em>The Curious Mr. Catesby <\/em>(2007).\u00a0 Mr. Elliott (&#8217;57) is the Executive Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catesbytrust.org\/\">Catesby Commemorative Trust<\/a>.\u00a0 I brought out the Watkinson&#8217;s copy of the first edition of Catesby&#8217;s <em>Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands<\/em> (1731-43) and showed it to an appreciative crowd.\u00a0 Trinity was able to purchase this copy in 1883 through the generosity of a &#8220;rich uncle&#8221; of a Trinity alumnus (George Lewis Cooke, class of 1870).<\/p>\n<p>The next day a steady stream of visitors were able to view the &#8220;bird of the week&#8221; from John James Audubon&#8217;s <em>Birds of America<\/em> set, which has been at Trinity for 112 years, as well as the newly acquired <a href=\"http:\/\/commons.trincoll.edu\/watkinson\/2012\/05\/03\/watkinson-acquires-2nd-folio-1632-of-shakespeare\/\">2nd Folio of Shakespeare<\/a>.\u00a0 At 1:30, with the help of Watkinson Trustee Jack Enders (&#8217;92), I presented a selection of recent acquisitions of ornithology material for the <a href=\"http:\/\/library.trincoll.edu\/research\/watk\/collections\/natural.cfm\">Enders collection<\/a>, given by his grandfather, Ostrom Enders in the 1980s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During &#8220;reunion week&#8221;
