The New England Emporium- Middletown, CT

Lizzie Smith

The downtown district of Middletown has many local restaurants and eateries that cater to a diverse range of pallets. One place many young, college-age people frequent is the New England Emporium. Tucked in the small shopping center called Main Street Market, the New England Emporium is known for its delicious artisan sandwiches and crepes. With a very cozy and welcoming atmosphere, the Emporium is great for meeting up with friends to talk over delicious food. The exposed brick walls and dark, distressed wood floors give the place a hip vibe that contributes to the quaint eatery’s aesthetic. In addition, large leather couches and comfy booths attract a younger crowd looking for a trendy place to hang out. Many Wesleyan students can be seen during the school year on their Macbooks, sipping coffee and chatting with friends. Business men and women dressed in nicely tailored suits can also be seen ordering food during their lunch breaks. The food is locally sourced and fresh, which appeals to a more upscale demographic. It emphasizes the use of local and natural products, which also attracts foodies looking for yummy, “hole-in’the-wall” eateries. While prices are a bit higher than comparable chain restaurants like Panera, the difference in quality is noticeable. The food tastes very fresh and is homemade by the skilled chefs.  Overall, the Emporium is a staple to Middletown for great local food.
