In the first page of “Lady Audley’s Secret” by Mary Elizabeth Braddon, we are immediately given the description of Audley Court in outstanding detail, allowing readers to imagine the court with ease, but also gives the reader an impression on how wealthy this family is. In the yard to the right of the court “were the kitchen gardens, the fish-pond, and an orchard” (Braddon 7) and to the left was “a wall bordered with espaliers”(7). The house was “very old, and very irregular and rambling”. If a family had all this in the past, then you could automatically interpret that the family has a lot of money. One of the things that I found to be a very strong signal that something was going to come further in the book was that “unless you were going to the Court you had no business there at all”(7). That kind of confused me because I wasn’t sure if Audley family was trying to lay low about something in particular or that they simply did not want anyone visiting their property. Not only may the description of the court tell us that something may come in the future, but the title foreshadows something huge and that is that the family must have some secret, which could be why they isolate themselves. We have no clue whether or not the secret that Lady Audley has been keeping is good or bad and we won’t find out until later on, but it definitely makes us think that something is up and also coming with this wealthy family.
