1. Although we rarely see Robert Audley doing any real work, he is ostensibly a professional barrister (i.e. a lawyer). Yet his real passion emerges when he begins investigating George Talboy’s disappearance. How does the novel characterize his detective work? Choose a passage and analyze it in detail, paying particular attention to diction.
2. What can we learn about George Talboys from the inventory of his library (134)? Look up Eton, Tom Jones, Byron, and Don Juan and summarize your findings. What sort of reader is Talboys?
3. What is Oliphant’s beef with sensation fiction? How would you compare her essay with either Carl Wilson or Ruth Graham and their approaches to criticism?
