Miracle- My Guilty Pleasure

I chose to reflect on the scene in the movieĀ Miracle where the head coach of the USA hockey team Herb Brooks delivers one of the most legendary pre-game speeches of all time to his team before they play Russia. I’m extremely proud to like this part of the movie because not only does it make me feel pride in being an American and hits home in that aspect, but it takes me back to a personal experience when I was playing in the state championship game in lacrosse my junior year. Our head coach, a quiet man at that, came into the locker room as we were completely silent, and gave us a speech that brought tears to all of our eyes as we were going against the number one team in the state being huge underdogs. When Herb tells the team that “great moments are born from great opportunities,” it reminds me of when our coach was preaching how we earned this opportunity as a team to prove that we can win and make a name for ourselves as a school, program, and town. The way coach Brooks gives his players confidence in telling them that they are going to skate with Russia, out hustle Russia, and its the USA’s time to beat Russia and show the world what they are made of takes me right back to the locker room at Staples high school. This makes for a guilty pleasure because while it’s a common notion to move on in college and forget about the high school days, this scene takes me back to those days, yet I really enjoy that about it and makes it bittersweet yet pleasureful for me to watch.
