Part II:

For my text analysis I have been examining the the week of March 1 through February 22.  What has been really fascinating off the bat is that on February 24 and February 23 no one tweeted about #energy.  But on a March 1, I am writing this post at 10 a.m. and I have already had about 2,000 tweets.  It’s crazy how some days I can have 2,000 tweets before 11 a.m. and some days I get nothing.  I hope to see in text analysis about current #energy issues that are going on in the world.  Seeing what is happening that day as opposed to what is what is happening in a general scale. It seems to be that one day jump starts people tweeting about #energy.

 

Part III:

My word cloud has come up with energy 2392.  Power 197. Panels 129. Solar 370.  Those are my most popular words.  What is fantastic is that my tweets and words associated with #energy are in regards to clean renewable energy, and not about a banana gave me #energy.  That the part of #energy people are tweeting about is power and solar panels, as a new form of renewable energy.

In terms of the words that are useless and not helping me that is things like days of the week and months, also things like 02 and weird letters like “a” with hat on it.  00 even comes up 113 times.  It is important to remove these out liars so that I can see what really surrounds #energy.

When I look at the terms I see a lot of renewable and oil as the words that jump out to me.  What is fascinating is renewable and oil have close to the same word count, (103 renewable, 104 oil).  It’s crazy how those words are almost polar opposites yet they surround #energy the same amount of times.  As I wrote above how Power panel and solar were some of my most frequented words.  That is great for my data because it means that tweets about #energy are about renewable energy. That people are going to tweet about clean renewable energy as much as they tweet about oil. That makes me hypothesize that people are tweeting about oil as a good #energy not a negative #energy.  We’ll see later in the lab if that hypothesis changes.  The cloud does suggest my topic and perfectly rounds out my hashtag.

IV:

The big terms I want to look into are solar, power and oil.  The constant debate that surrounds by hashtag is how broad it is.  How energy has multiple meanings in our society.  I’ve said it before it can mean anything from energy your body gains by taking a workout supplement or to clean renewable energy source.  I am choosing these terms because they talk about clean renewable energy and what it going on globally in terms of our planets energy crisis.  Power is one of the most seen words in my cloud.  That is why that and solar are both the second largest words to energy.  Solar I chose to follow because solar energy is becoming a massive movement globally because it is seen as a replacement to fossil fuels.  Oil is really interesting to see linked with #energy because it is almost the opposite of what I am studying.  I’m studying clean energy in a renewable setting siting that oil is the problem.  I want to examine those tweets and see if oil and energy are in a positive or negative light.

That article I chose was from the journal of American Academy of Political and social science, it is about solar energy can become a clean long last sustainable energy source.  I chose this article because solar energy has been a major part of my data and it is one of my buzz words.  Solar energy is also a hot topic with all the innovation that is coming with it today.  “Recent and impending fuel shortages, cost increases of energy and environmental degradation have provided strong incentives for the development of solar energy for wide practical us” (Lof pg. 52).  That oil price is going up and we are beginning to run out of oil and we need to look for a new ever lasting energy.  Solar energy is the answer to that problem.  What is amazing is that Energy and solar are the two big words.  The words that are surrounding solar and energy are similar words that are on my energy cloud as well.  They are all within the clean renewable energy realm.  This helps me better understand my twitter data set.  He gives me insight into buzz words that surround energy and solar.  It gives me a subset of my data and an understanding of what words to follow.

Part VII:
Tufte definition says that “superior methods are more likely to produce truthful, credible and precise findings.”  Meaning that looking at scholarly word and educated data, not just thousands of tweets from random people will breed strong credible data.  Yau says that doing what we are doing in class is the best way to find data and I agree with Yau.  I believe that the more data you collect the more telling it is.  That through examining not only what scholars say, but also what the average Joe is saying that is the bets way to find data and examine what is really happening.  I think this is the best approach by far because it opens us to examine the issue in every demographic.

  1. It is weird/interesting how some days you have thousands of tweets before 11am, and other days you have none. I am sure it is refreshing to discover that tweets about #energy are about renewable energy, and not about other variations/uses of #energy. It is also good that you think people are tweeting about oil as a good #energy and not a negative #energy, not just for your data, but also for society. I am curious why there is what appears to be an IP address in your word cloud.

I think its really interesting that two of the most common words that show up in your cirrus image is “renewable” and “oil” as this really illustrates the current national debate about available energy sources and its benefits/drawbacks in not just an environmental impact, but also its economical, commercial, political, and overall societal impact. It’s crazy that your data on #energy can get really sparse over a couple days and then spike high on other days. Why do you think #energy trends so differently over time? I think the diversity of your hashtag is what makes your data so unique and mapping the different types of energy that are trending among twitter says a lot about the energy debate that is ongoing today and provides a lot of insight into how this debate fuels the #keystoneXL project.

  3. I am also perplexed that a hashtag as dynamic and diverse as energy would be so episodic in its appearance on social media. However, I found your graphs very interesting in considering the state of flux that hashtags relating to energy seem to exist within. For instances, it was very interesting to see how solar declined on Feb 26-27 while oil spiked in popularity. I wonder what caused this inverse shift between the two terms – I imagine it would definitely be worth exploring. I also wonder what your tweets may reveal about other forms of renewable energy like wind. Socially, however, I am glad you feel that tweets referencing the use of fossil fuels are negative, while tweets referencing renewable are positive. Only 3.8 more years to go!!
