What I noticed from the book trailer was that Penguin Teen, a well-known book publisher, created it. From the account’s name one can tell that their primary audience would be teenagers, therefore they construct their book trailers to appeal to their target audience. So what I took from the book trailer was that they put emphasis on keys words and phrases such as “love” and “Unmake the World” coupled with a collage of videos of a boy and a girl together on a swing set and an Indy song put on in the background. The video of the girl and boy on the swing set bring about a relatable aspect to Penguin Teen’s audience and the artistic touch to the video is appealing to the eyes. The short couple phrases that pop in the video give the viewer a general idea of what the book is going to bring about for them, what they are going to feel while reading the book. What I could take away from the video was that it had to be about a boy and a girl, facing tragedy (“Unmake the World”), who fall in love.
Overall the clip was thirty seconds long and perfectly sold the book to the audience they were trying to reach. They didn’t put too much emphasis on the video itself by making longer than it had to be and it drew in the viewer by putting power phrases every couple seconds all complimented by an easy going background song. Compared to the movie trailer, however, this is some pretty weak stuff. The movie trailer has the whole nine yards filled with powerful scenes, characters that a viewer can get familiar with, and represents the main conflict: cancer. The movie trailer dwarfs the book trailer for a variety of reasons, one being that they’re focusing on the cinematic aspect of the story, not the written story itself. They have to draw attention to audiences by having a long trailer that gives them something to talk about and spread the word. As for the book trailer, its short and sweet style is perfect for the product. It begs the viewer to go out and learn more about the story, not just go see a movie.
Another book trailer that I found was one for “The Maze Runner”, a book that is having a movie made about it this coming year. From seeing these two book trailers I can take away that only very popular books read by younger audiences have book trailers. This is probably due to the fact that younger audiences are more familiar with technology and have more time on their hands to look up trailers for certain books.
