TIFO: “Djibril Cisse Hits Out at ‘Racist’ Greek League . . .”

While this incident occurred over two years ago, this is simply a prime example of blatant racism in the footballing world.

Djibril Cisse was the victim of racial abuse during the 2011 season in the Greek football league and claimed that racism was an issue throughout the entire league. Players even stormed the field after a game and attacked him.

Cisse insisted, “I was their target. Some of them hit me and I retaliated to defend myself. It’s a disgrace”.

This article pertains to the issue of racism in football today. While football has come along way since its time in Brazil during the early 20th century, the issue of racism is still an ever-present factor during international football matches. We see how CSKA Moscow fans racially abused Yaya Toure, a Manchester City player, during a match in Russia a few months ago. While this is incident is very concerning, an even more pressing issue is the fact that Russia will be hosting the 2018 World Cup and is also fighting with gay rights activists as the Winter Olympics are on the verge of commencing in Russia as well.

Introduction:

There’s the acknowledged notion that throughout the history of football, a clubs success has become synonymous with the interest of large companies that wish to make money off of said clubs. (Ex: Manchester City and Etihad or Arsenal and Emirates)

Basic Definitions Handout PCQs:

-The idea of race seems to be a rather cut and dry theory based on anatomists such as Cuvier who felt that there were three separate subspecies, which in turn drastically affected the social structure of society.

-The racial discrimination problem emphasizes the notion that discrimination is the norm in society, but in countries such as the US, there is the constant emphasis on equality in all aspects of living.

-The origins of race and racial discrimination seem to stem from capitalist ideals that created the social structure of society and delegated non white people into a inferior category in order to attain their desired capitalist ideals. Continue reading
