Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Arthur Iberall had a vision in which he incorporated the questions that all of us asked – How do complex systems really work? Can physics be applied to real world problems? Is there a logic to running our society? How do human systems actually work? Where are all the thermodynamic engines and oscillators in the body and how do they interact? What physical and chemical data really need to be collected to do tasks such as design drugs that incorporate a homeokinetic perspective? What are the catalytic messaging units in the neuronal language?
As we all know, Ibby passed away in December of 2002, leaving us, his friends and colleagues, a legacy to expand upon. The next generation awaits the information that is presently carried in his writings and our brains. The information is too important to let it dissipate.
Therefore, his family and friends have designed a first step towards carrying on the homeokinetic message. The Arthur S. Iberall Distinguished Annual Lecture Series has been established at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Connecticut, in collaboration with the Center for the Ecological Study of Perception and Action (CESPA) and the International Society for Ecological Psychology (ISEP). Every year, a scientist will be chosen who has explored connections between physical processes and their manifestations in nature, life, humankind, mind, and society. The nominating committee is tasked with finding honorees who reflect a broad range of fields, just as Ibby reached out to so many diverse disciplines. The scientist will receive an honorarium and travel accommodations, and the lecture will be published in the journal Ecological Psychology.
We anticipate the need for about $50,000 to create this annual lecture. We are soliciting funds to raise this amount. Our goal is to have the first lecture this fall of 2003. If you are interested in contributing, please send a check or money order payable to “The University of Connecticut” to:
