JACK DELANO: PHOTOGRAPHER (1914 – 1997)

​The Department of Fine Arts at Trinity College is pleased to present “Jack Delano: Photographer (1914 – 1997): A Centennial Celebration Exhibition,” running from Feb. 6 – Mar. 14, 2014, at Widener Gallery in Trinity College’s Austin Arts Center.

In conjunction with Jack Delano’s photography exhibition there will be a screening of two films on Wed., Mar. 5, at 7 p.m. in Boyer Auditorium, Life Sciences Building, Trinity College:

Autógrafo: Jack Delano, is a short biographic sketch of Mr. Delano, produced in 2009 by Autógrafo TV, San Juan, Puerto Rico.  It is in Spanish with English subtitles.

Los Peloteros (1951), a classic of Puerto Rican cinema, is a feature film directed by Jack Delano, with original music composed by Delano. This film is in Spanish but a plot summary provided in English.

                     

The films will be introduced by Pablo Delano. The screening is co-sponsored by the Latin American & Iberian Film Festival and the Hispanic Studies Program at Trinity College.

Antonio Méndez Esparza’s directorial debut radiantly captures the complex homecoming of a loving father. In an unexpected take on the traditional immigrant story, Pedro returns home to a small mountain village in Guerrero, Mexico, after years of working in New York. He finds his daughters older and more distant than he imagined; his wife still has the same smile. The villagers think this year’s crop will be bountiful and there is work in a growing city nearby. But the locals are wise to a life of insecurity, and their thoughts are often of family members or opportunities far away, north of the border.

Con este debut como director, Antonio Méndez Esparza captura el regreso a casa de un padre cariñoso. En un giro inesperado a la tradicional historia del migrante, Pedro regresa a su pequeño pueblo en las montañas de Guerrero en México después de haber pasado años trabajando en Nueva York. Pedro encuentra a sus hijas más crecidas y distantes de lo que él imaginaba; no obstante, su esposa aún tiene la misma sonrisa. La gente del pueblo piensa que la cosecha será buena y hay trabajo en la ciudad cercana; sin embargo, la gente se ha acostumbrado a una vida de inseguridad y piensa a menudo en sus familiares o en las oportunidades en el lejano norte de la frontera.

Don Alfonso plays the marimba (xylophone) for a living but as his traditional music is seen as increasingly old-fashioned, he finds himself without a job. When his glue-sniffing godson introduces him to Blacko, an old heavy-metal legend of the Guatemalan underground, they decide to do something radical and fuse the sounds of the marimba with heavy metal. This innovative—some might say bizarre—idea sparks the beginning of an unexpected collaboration.

Cuando su ahijado, adicto a inhalar pegamento, le presenta a Blacko, una leyenda del heavy-metal de la resistencia guatemalteca, deciden juntos crear algo radical fusionando los sonidos del la marimba con los del heavy metal. Esta innovadora –y tal vez loca– idea inspira el principio de una colaboración inesperada.

Born into a Sahrawi refugee camp before being sent to live with foster parents in Spain, Fatimetu returns to her Saharan birthplace following the death of her mother and, despite having been absent for sixteen years, finds herself expected to resume family duties. With unprecedented access to the Sahrawi community, who are still waiting for status under international law, Wilaya is Pedro Pérez Rosado’s poetic evocation of being caught between two worlds.

Nacida en un campo de refugiados Saharaui antes de ser enviada a vivir con sus padres adoptivos a España, Fatimetu regresa a su lugar de origen después de la muerte de su madre. A pesar de haber estado ausente por dieciséis años, su familia espera que asuma sus responsabilidades familiares. Con un acceso sin precedentes a la comunidad Saharaui, que aún espera la decisión sobre su estatus bajo la ley internacional, Pedro Pérez Rosado evoca poéticamente en Wilaya el estar inmerso en dos mundos.

Trio Tremonti, a new collaboration by violinist Saul Bitrán, cellist Jan Müller-Szeraws, and pianist Sally Pinkas, will make its Connecticut debut in a concert presented by Trinity’s Department of Music in Hamlin Hall tonight, September 19th, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

La Paz’s Zona Sur neighborhood is Bolivia’s most exclusive enclave and has housed the country’s affluent elite for generations. Here, in an adobe-tile-roofed castle, a statuesque matriarch reigns over her spoiled offspring and indigenous servants. Social change, however unwelcome, is on its way. As the mother squabbles with her self-indulgent, oversexed teenage son and clashes with her petulant daughter, her 6-year-old boy wanders the rooftops unsupervised. The scent of impending decline permeates the air, and the threat of aristocratic privileges quickly changing hands heralds a new era in a seemingly interminable class war. Bolivia’s official entry for the Academy® Awards foreign-language film race, this searing portrait of a patrician family in flux eloquently chronicles their final days during a time of intense social change and cogently exposes the bubble of decadence in which they exist.

El vecindario Zona Sur de la Paz es la zona más exclusiva, habitada por generaciones de la élite más rica del país. Aquí, en un castillo de tejado de adobe, una matriarca escultural manda sobre sus mimados hijos y sus sirvientes indígenas. El cambio social, aunque inoportuno, está llevándose a cabo. Mientras la madre riñe con su hijo, autocomplaciente y libidinoso, y discute con su caprichosa hija, su pequeño de seis años vaga sin vigilancia por las azoteas. El declive inminente se hace sentir y la amenaza de que los privilegios aristocráticos pronto han de cambiar de manos anuncia una nueva era en una guerra aparentemente interminable. Este punzante retrato de una familia aristocrática en transformación, que es la entrada oficial de Bolivia a la competencia para los Premios de la Academia Cinematográfica por la mejor película en lengua extranjera, relata sus últimos días en un periodo de intenso cambio social y expone de forma contundente la atmósfera de decadencia en la cual vive.

In this black comedy, Leonardo (Rafael Spregelburd) is a prestigious designer who lives with his family in a famous house designed by Le Corbusier. Life is seemingly ideal for Leonardo until one day his neighbor Victor (Daniel Aráoz), a boorish used-car salesman, breaks through a common wall to make a window in order to “catch a few rays of sun.” Unfortunately, Victor’s new window looks directly into Leonardo’s living space. As the tension mounts between Leonardo and Victor, the film explores the complex relationships between class differences, social barriers, and right and wrong.
