English Language Arts Projects

  1. Introduction to Nursery Rhymes and Fables – The simplistic purpose of this unit is to help students understand the characteristics of nursery rhymes and fables and to be able to differentiate between the two. I will also highlight the complex and diverse histories of nursery rhymes and fables. To further add nuance to the unit, I want to provide tools to students to enable them to feel confident in challenging the dominant stereotypical norms they may face throughout life and beyond the classroom.  By Elizabeth Murphy
  2. ED 200 Curriculum Pres This unit focuses on the integration of culturally diverse literature starting as young as kindergarten.  It is imperative that children be surrounded by inclusive literature as early as they are able to recognize it so that this may become the new normal and we may weed out the notion that every story book contains a white cast of characters. In reading more diverse stories, students may begin to celebrate diversity at a far younger age, and learn to appreciate as they continue through their years of schooling. By Katie Power
  3. The Power of Words – My unit is a four lesson unit focused on connecting students with the power of words and empowering them to use their voices in advocacy. For many, the language explored in school doesn’t properly reflect the way language impacts their lives at home. Whether this is because it has become increasingly academic, or English is not their first language. This unit aims to reconnect the two, so that in school students can recognize themselves, their experiences, and feel not only empowered to make change but a sense of belonging. By Maggie Petruzella
